Substance Use Specialist

Position Summary

The Substance Use Specialist will function as part of a dynamic team providing direct services to a diverse population of multicultural, domestic, and international students navigating substance use and abuse, as well as students in recovery from a substance use disorder. This position works to empower students to continue and/or develop healthy lifestyle choices in the area of alcohol and other drug use with the goals to increase the potential for academic success, a positive quality of life, decrease the incidence of morbidity and mortality and improve the overall health of the campus-community environment. Position will engage students through individual and group counseling for issues related to substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders. Position will function within an integrated health and wellness system and as part of a multi-disciplinary team providing a continuum of care including education, prevention, early intervention, brief therapy, and recovery supports.   Position will conduct substance abuse screenings and assessments, provide counseling for students struggling with issues related to substance use and electronically document student contacts.   Position will lead didactic/support and recovery groups.  Position will be responsible for recognizing signs and symptoms related to acute substance intoxication and/or withdraw, determining the appropriate level of care, and making referrals as indicated. Position will coordinate care and discharge planning with referrals sources and treatment providers. Position collaborates with campus and community partners and coordinates outreach and prevention programs with students.  Position will prepare and conduct presentations and workshops to educate students, faculty, staff and community partners on topics related to substance use/abuse, substance use disorders, and recovery.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing one or two years of graduate study beyond a Bachelor's degree, such as a Masters in Social Work; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in counseling in a health/mental health environment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and State Social Worker License. 

Desired Qualifications

Five or more years of professional experience in a clinical setting; experience in administering and interpreting substance abuse screening and assessment tools, engaging individuals from person-centered and strength-based modalities in both harm reduction and abstinence-based brief interventions. Understanding of substance abuse prevention, treatment, and harm reduction  theories and practice. Demonstrated ability to successfully work as part of a team and with a diverse community providing services from a non-judgmental perspective.   Experience working with college aged university students.  Ability to dynamically present to students and or stakeholders in group settings.  Excellent organizational, team work, collaboration building, communication and writing skills. Strong verbal, written and presentation skills, ability to effectively relate to a diverse population of students, colleagues, faculty, staff and multidisciplinary professionals.  Addiction Certification such as CAADC/ CADC or equivalent.

Work Hours

General Office Hours 8AM-5PM Monday thru Friday. Some evening and weekend hours required for presentatiions and training sessions
