Computing Linux Systems Administrator

Position Summary

As a High Performance Computing Linux systems administrator, you will work with a team of systems administrators and research specialists to support the university’s research computing needs. As part of the Institute for Cyber-Enabled Research, the High Performance Computing Center administers nearly 1,000 nodes in compute clusters, including large memory systems, high speed Infiniband networks, accelerator-based systems, and several petabytes of high performance storage. You will deploy and test new systems and services, monitor, diagnose, support and upgrade existing services, using the technologies described in Desired Qualifications, and help researchers effectively use the HPCC’s systems. 

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in a scientific, engineering, or a related information technology discipline; one to three years related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in Linux or HPC systems administration and, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 

Desired Qualifications

Experience implementing, operating or maintaining a production Linux environment (Red Hat Enterprise Linux, or Debian), including: 

  • system services (OpenSSH, Apache HTTP Server, nginx, or OpenLDAP) 

  • scripting languages (Bash, Python, or Perl),  

  • TCP/IP and Ethernet networking 

  • basic database administration (MySQL or PostgreSQL), 

  • configuration management (Puppet),  

  • hardware diagnostics, 

  • and familiarity with information security best practices. 

 Experience with high performance computing, cloud, or infrastructure tools and platforms, including: 

  • scientific computing applications,  

  • high speed networking (Mellanox Infiniband), 

  • high performance storage (Lustre, Spectrum Scale, BeeGFS, NFS) 

  • batch job systems (Slurm) 

  • version control (git)  

  • provisioning and hardware management (xCAT) 

  • containerization tools (Docker, Singularity) 

  • monitoring tools (Prometheus and Icinga) 

  • virtualization (VMWare VSphere and ESXi) 

  • and cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure) is desired but not required.
