Position Summary

Reporting to the Senior Director of Advancement, and working in a complex organizational setting, the Associate Director of Alumni Engagement will oversee alumni engagement efforts for the College of Human Medicine, keeping in mind the philanthropic potential for alumni. The associate director will be responsible for developing a strategic framework for engagement and discovery of alumni in key markets under the guidance of CHM Advancement leadership, and in collaboration with the alumni board, college faculty and advancement colleagues across the university.

The associate director will develop the strategies and programs necessary to ensure high return on alumni engagement and investment of university resources by providing analysis and recommendations to the decision-makers on prioritization of alumni markets and engagement, with a focus on fundraising potential.

The Associate Director of Alumni Relations and Engagement will be responsible for establishing and building relationships with a wide range of alumni, locally, regionally, nationally and internationally, to advance the goals of the College of Human Medicine and Michigan State University.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge normally acquired by completing a four year college degree program in Business, Communication Arts, Marketing or related field; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in higher education fundraising, event coordination, public speaking; or and equivalent combination of education and experience. Possession of a valid vehicle operator's license.

Note: this position requires frequent travel. 

Desired Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and a minimum of five years in direct responsibility for an alumni relations and/or volunteer program or annual giving in a non-profit setting, preferably in higher education. S/he must have excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as strong interpersonal skills and organizational abilities. S/he must have exceptional work ethic and extensive experience in collaboration.

S/he will be an articulate and savvy leader with demonstrated success in working with volunteers, experience with events planning and resource management, working knowledge of the principles and practices of alumni and/or volunteer engagement in higher education, the ability to conceptualize and implement engagement programs of complexity, including the ability to envision and articulate future direction, and knowledge and understanding of academic governance and its relationship to an effective fundraising program in higher education.  S/he must be capable of anticipating challenges and issues, and demonstrate the ability to stimulate and lead change.

The candidate will have exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to interact effectively with academic leaders, faculty, staff, donors, civic leaders, and volunteers, the leadership skills to inspire confidence and motivate others, a high level of integrity, initiative, creativity and energy, strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and good listening skills. S/he will be well organized, focused and have a goal-oriented work style with the ability to work both independently and with a team. S/he will work well collectively and collaboratively with colleagues to achieve common goals, have an intuitive sense of the whole enterprise, combined with practical, project orientation skills, strong management skills to effectively organize, direct, motivate and evaluate other professional and support staff and volunteers, sound judgment and strong problem solving ability.  S/he will be required to frequently assess complex situations, make wise decisions, practice hands-on management and have the ability to plan, organize and coordinate activities that move individuals from a prospect to a donor.
