The Biomedical Engineering Department and the Institute for Quantitative Health Science and Engineering (IQ) at Michigan State University are seeking a Research Assistant III. This position will be working jointly between IQ and the Spence Lab. The successful candidate will be managing the 3D-printing Core Facility at IQ and will be working closely with the research efforts of the Spence lab. The Spence Lab research project focuses on research the metabolism of various blood cells in health and disease, specifically diabetes and multiple sclerosis.
Job duties include but are not limited to:
- Operating and maintaining 3D-printers and associated large equipment and scientific instrumentation
- Performing novel research pertaining to 3D-printing for bioengineering purposes
- Writing and publishing papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals
- Organizing and coordinating customer billing
- Seeking funding for 3D-printing projects
- Assisting and coordinating research and laboratory operations
- Handle and perform analyses on human blood samples
- Working with graduate and undergraduate students to perform research to meet the goals of the Spence lab research program
Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired through completion of one or two years of post-bachelor degree work, such as a Master's in the specific field of research employment; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in research methodologies, writing reports, supervision, software, data interpretation and handling in area related to research being performed; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and may require special licensing or certification in the field related to the area of employment.
Experience using 3D-printing for device fabrication is a must. Knowledge of chemical instrumentation is a plus. PhD in analytical chemistry, material science, biomedical engineering, or a similar degree is a plus.

This is an off-dated position funded for one year from date of hire with possible extension contingent upon funding renewal.
