Position Summary

The Department of Communication in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University invites applications for the position of Chairperson.  The MSU Department of Communication is one of the discipline’s storied programs with six decades of students and faculty making foundational contributions to theory and methods in communication.

We are looking for a visionary leader and social scientist with an understanding of the rich heritage of the past but with an eye on the future.  Recently, the department has made hires and invested in labs in virtual reality, computational communication and neurocognitive communication.  Candidates for Chairperson should have a broad vision of communication science that encompasses these new and emerging areas with the traditional strengths of the department in social influence and interpersonal, organizational, mediated, political, and health communication. Candidates should have a record of scholarship and reputation to justify appointment at the rank of tenured Full Professor.

Required Degree

Doctorate -Communication or a related field

Minimum Requirements

  • Qualified applicants will have a record of scholarship and reputation to justify appointment at the rank of tenured Full Professor. 
  • Qualified applicants should have administrative experience, a social scientific focus, a background in quantitative research methods, and experience in teaching. 
  • Applicants should have a Ph.D. in Communication or a related field.  

Desired Qualifications

A strong history of securing and providing leadership in the acquisition of extramural funding will be looked upon favorably.

Department Statement

The Department of Communication has played a large role in helping to establish the international academic field of communication.  Nearly a third of all ICA Fellows are connected to this program as graduates or faculty.  Since 1960, the department has awarded 375 doctorates in communication, resulting in a large and vibrant international network of Michigan State graduates and former faculty who now lead communication programs of their own and send many of their best students to Michigan State for advanced training.  The department is noted for its long-running excellence in communication theory, research design, quantitative methods training, and an apprentice-like experience for advanced students in research teams.  The faculty regularly have research grants from the U.S. National Institutes of Health and the U.S. National Science Foundation, and other sponsors.  Many department graduate teaching assistants and faculty have won excellence in teaching and mentoring awards over the years.  Faculty have also been acknowledged for excellence in scholarship as University Distinguished Professors, Distinguished Professors, and Beal Professors.  The department has 11 endowments for the support of graduate and undergraduate students.
