Director of GLATOS
The Department of Fisheries and Wildlife seeks a Quantitative Fishery Behavioral Ecologist, Director of the Great Lakes Acoustic Telemetry Observation System (GLATOS). This position is a fixed-term appointment at the Assistant/Associate Professor level with an initial term of five years renewed annually based on productivity of the individual and funding.
To provide scientific leadership for a field-based research program that investigates movement behavior and dynamics of Great Lakes fishes in relation to fishery ecology and management. In addition to conducting their own research program, the successful candidate will lead and serve as director of the Great Lakes Acoustic Telemetry Observation System (GLATOS; http://glatos.glos.us/), a basin-wide network of scientists who use telemetry to advance and improve conservation and management of Great Lakes fishes by providing information on: behavior, habitat use, and population dynamics.
In addition, the successful candidate will help the transfer of GLATOS research results to management agencies and the public working closely with the Michigan Sea Grant (MSG) Program, Michigan State University Extension (MSUE), and their partners. This person’s research program will be conducted in close collaboration with researchers and staff associated with the Great Lakes Fishery Commission (GLFC) and at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Great Lakes Science Center’s (GLSC) Hammond Bay Biological Station (HBBS) and consist of a mix of graduate students and post-doctoral research associates. The position requires teaching one course every other year on a topic to be determined collaboratively with the teaching faculty in the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife. Expectations for the individual who occupies this position include the ability to obtain external grant and contract funding resulting in excellent research productivity combined with effective outreach to our partners, and meaningful teaching and mentoring activities. The successful candidate will be a faculty member associated with the Partnership for Ecosystem Research and Management (PERM) within the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife. The individual will be expected to collaborate, as appropriate, with the faculty, staff, and students in the Center for Systems Integration and Sustainability (CSIS), the Quantitative Fisheries Center (QFC), and the Landscape Ecology Laboratory, as appropriate. Salary will be commensurate with background and experience.
This position is a fixed-term appointment at the Assistant/Associate Professor level dependant on candidate qualifications, with an initial term of five years and with the potential for renewals of additional five-year terms based on productivity of the individual and funding availability.

PhD required in one of the fields listed: ecology, behavioral science, fishery science, or related discipline; must have a history of success in producing peer-reviewed publications and the ability to obtain competitive external funding for their research program. Qualified candidates must be able to demonstrate expertise in whole-animal behavioral research, field experimental design, statistical analysis of behavioral data, and be able to analyze data using command line scripting language (R, python). The candidate also must be able to provide administrative leadership to GLATOS including strategic goal setting, personnel management, and budgetary decision making.
