This position is part of our Department and College commitments to increase our capacity to offer programs for students that explicitly take on a critical and culturally responsive stance toward improving the schooling experiences and life outcomes of traditionally underprivileged and marginalized youth.
MSU’s College of Education is a top-ranked college with research centers and initiatives addressing issues in urban education, educational leadership, school improvement, district and state level reform, educational policy, international education studies, and measurement and assessment. The EAD department offers multiple, rigorous graduate programs for aspiring school leaders and researchers, including Master’s, Certification Pathway, Ed.D. and Ph.D. programs, with many courses being offered at the MSU Detroit Center in downtown Detroit. The College is home to the University-wide Graduate Urban Education Certification Program. The College also houses a dynamic outreach center that links faculty with practitioners and policymakers across the state.
Areas of Scholarship/Research Specialization
We seek a scholar committed to core issues in urban education with a specific focus on the K-12 context. Successful candidates must have demonstrated an active interest in the field through research and scholarship in urban education and/or race, equity, and culture. However, we are open to considering candidates who imagine the intersection of their work with urban education in multiple ways. For example, successful candidates might situate their work in such areas as urban educational leadership, urban communities, opportunity gaps, culturally responsive school leadership, critical race theory, historically marginalized students and families, and/or urban school and district improvement. We are also interested in scholars whose work is place-based, with an interest in focusing on the improvement of marginalized communities.
The individual hired for this position has the potential, based on individual preferences and program needs, to take on leadership roles and/or contribute to ongoing efforts in the following areas: the university-wide urban certification program; EAD’s urban K-12 initiatives; partnerships with Detroit and other urban areas in the state; the College’s efforts to provide state-wide service and outreach in and beyond the urban centers in Michigan; and/or grant-seeking for urban research and/or initiatives. The individual hired for this position would also have the opportunity to teach existing EAD courses including the History of Urban Education, Racial Achievement Gap, Leadership for Social Justice, and Diverse Students and Families, as well as to develop new courses based on their specific areas of interest.
Candidates are expected to contribute to the field through actively conducting research, publishing, and securing external funding. We seek individuals committed to collaborating with faculty and professional colleagues to shape high-quality degree and outreach programs, teach master’s and doctoral level courses (face-to-face, online, and hybrid), advise students, and supervise doctoral research. We also seek someone who will undertake institutional and professional service, as well as engage in outreach scholarship with communities serving high-need schools in Michigan.
Doctorate -Education or related field
Applicants should be prepared to assume the responsibilities listed above. Commensurate with rank the applicant should have a record of strong scholarly accomplishment through publication and success in obtaining and leading externally funded projects is also expected. Evidence of capacity to contribute to the intellectual, research, and instructional life of MSU is essential. A record of a commitment to excellent teaching is also expected. We also seek someone who will undertake institutional and professional service, as well as engage in outreach scholarship with communities serving high-need schools in Michigan.
We are interested in scholars whose work is place-based, with an interest in focusing on the improvement of marginalized communities in Detroit or other urban centers in Michigan (e.g., Flint, Battle Creek, Lansing). Candidates with experience bridging policy and practice are highly desirable, as are candidates with experience working with initiatives, projects, and centers that focus on improving schools and the preparation of leaders in traditionally underserved schools. More advanced scholars should have a record of leadership in externally funded research projects and/or professional organizations. Evidence of high-quality teaching at the master’s and doctoral level (face-to-face, online, and hybrid courses) is preferred.
