Position Summary

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

  • Designs, develops, conducts and evaluates early stage career development activities and strategies to engage students in exploring and identifying their purpose.  Activities may be delivered through internet technology, class presentations, career fairs, workshops/programs, outreach and other settings.
  • Participates in student retention interventions in coordination with academic advising initiatives.  Conducts outreach to academic probation students who have indicated concerns regarding major or career indecision.
  • Conducts needs assessments, assists in establishing learning goals, tracks student engagement and evaluates learning outcomes. Prepares and writes reports outlining metric progress and evaluation.
  • Develops purpose education and career design resources appropriate for introductory career advising and transitional career advising (e.g., major change) that are available for both career services staff and academic advisors.
  • Consults with campus partners about strategies for implementing purpose dialogue within their engagements with students.
  • Delivers purpose and career design based seminars/classes across campus inclusive of the Spartan Success Scholars program.
  • Advises students with a focus on early stage career development.
  • Selects, trains, and supervises career peer advisers who engage students in conversations around purpose, provide early stage peer advising, and facilitate interactive purpose based activities.
  • Develops and facilitates training programs for student leaders (e.g., Residential Assistants, Intercultural Aids) preparing them to facilitate purposeful dialogues within their respective communities.
  • Collaborates with college career consultants to facilitate student connections to career/college specific professional preparation opportunities and services.
  • Designs, edits and/or prepares informational materials, written communications, reports, and multi-media materials for web and print distribution focused on purpose exploration and career design. Contributes to career services and other campus publications.
  • Coordinates Career Services’ involvement in the MSU Parent Orientation program.
  • Participates in the Purpose support pillar within the Neighborhood Student Success Collaborative.
  • Collaborates with Neighborhood Engagement Directors, academic advisers, and residence education staff to deliver career services in the Neighborhoods.   Serves on groups and committees as appropriate.
  • Partners with career services colleagues across campus to deliver joint programming.  Assists with major campus career events.
  • Builds and sustains strong professional relationships and networks.
  • Attends, presents, and represents University at career related professional conferences.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a Master's degree, and one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience related to the area of employment; or knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a Bachelor’s degree, and three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience developing career programs and activities; advising individuals and groups in a variety of settings; public speaking; writing and editing for mass distribution; working in a team environment; use of internet, word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation software; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Degree in related field; experience working with students at the university level in a career advising role or other career-related setting; demonstrated professionalism; excellent customer service skills and attitude; interpersonal, organizational, analytical, and problem solving skills; strong ability to organize, prioritize, and work independently; ability to juggle a variety of responsibilities; willingness and ability to take initiative; ability to be flexible, learn quickly, desire and ability to build relationships with faculty and staff, other units and offices at MSU, employers, and alumni; ability to function as a member of a team with a common goal of departmental success.
