Position Summary

Directs the operations of Sparty's Market, an urban grocery store on MSU East Lansing campus; directs the day-to-day operations of the grocery store, both front and back of the house operations; upholds Residential and Hospitality Services mission and values; ongoing review of customer feedback to ensure appropriate product mix, resolution of customer concerns, and exceptional customer experience; forecasts staffing needs and develops a recruiting strategy to provide optimal staffing in all areas of the grocery store; leads and directs the work of full and part-time employees; coordinates maintenance and provides training for equipment and culinary needs; coordinates and provides training for customer service and brand standards & promotions; works in collaboration with Vendors and Culinary Services Corporate Kitchen to ensure exceptional culinary standards in the market; oversees and maintains inventory and demonstrates good utilization of on-hand product to minimize waste; ensures all employees receive proper training and supervision to ensure correct ordering, receiving, unloading, storage, and rotation of products; manages inventory controls and expenses by monitoring labor costs, shrink, damage and pilferage.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge normally acquired in the first two or three years in college, technical, or vocational school in a field related to the area of responsibility; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in supervising operational activities related to the area of employment; OR knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in a field related to the area of responsibility; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in supervising operational activities related to the area of employment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

Experience and education in grocery store management; experience in category management, budget analysis, operational record keeping, and database software; ability to work in an extremely fast paced, highly mobile student guest environment; previous work supervising operational activities in a management setting; prior experience creating partner and vendor “win-win” relationships, Collaborate with marketing and branding efforts; experience with point-of-sale systems, interviewing, training, scheduling, and knowledge of essential Human Resources functions; demonstrated experience in quick service restaurant management of 3-5 years with respect to food preparation and presentation, recipe formulation, costing, and product procurement.

Work Hours

Variable start times of 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., variable end times of 3:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. Monday - Friday and rotating weekends based on operational hours with days off during the week.
