Substance Abuse Coordinator
Performs individual/group counseling with clients and provides crisis intervention services to treat normal developmental problems, aid victims in emotional distress, treat mental health adjustment and substance abuse problems; prepares intake and treatment notes and reports to track patient care; conducts presentations and workshops to educate clients, parents, University staff, health care professionals and the community regarding developmental and treatment issues, consults with clients and staff to assess the need for additional services and refers to campus/community referral sources when appropriate; establishes and coordinates didactic/support groups around designated issues to assist and support clients; acts as a patient advocate with various service providers; participates as a team member and/or liaison in staff meetings, committees, conferences and organizational meetings; attends professional conferences, workshops and continuing education programs; performs comprehensive psycho-social evaluations and provides individual/group counseling in order to treat the mental health concerns of clients, with a primary focus on substance abuse counseling; provides primary supervision of social work graduate students.
Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing one or two years of graduate study beyond a Bachelor's degree, such as a Masters in Social Work; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in counseling in a health/mental health environment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and State certification as a Social Worker. ACSW may be required in order to provide primary supervision of social work students.
Five or more years of professional experience, including administrative or supervisory experience in a clinical setting; experience in administering and interpreting substance abuse screening tools, and providing substance abuse services to a diverse population; working knowledge of substance abuse prevention and treatment services, strong verbal and written presentation skills; ability to effectively relate to students, colleagues, faculty, staff, and multidisciplinary professionals. CADC preferred. Valid state of Michigan licensure or license eligible within 6 months of hire as a social worker, licensed professional counselor, or license eligible social worker within the state of Michigan.
