Marketing Brand Manager

Position Summary

The Marketing Brand Manager (Communication Manager I) is responsible for managing the strategic marketing initiatives and brand oversight for the department of Residence Education and Housing Services (REHS) at Michigan State University. The Marketing Brand Manager will serve as a liaison with Residential and Hospitality Services (RHS) Creative Services, as well as internal and external partners, to promote the Residence Education and Housing Services and Live On, as well as the Residential and Hospitality Services brand. Duties include: planning, designing and conducting primary and secondary market research to help guide sound business and marketing decisions, including: competitive strategic analysis, consumer segmentation and consumer insight development. Identifies sources of information, researches, surveys, interviews and conducts focus groups to obtain information from and about key audiences. Makes recommendations to the Assistant Director of Communications for REHS based on research; assisting with the development and implementation of the communications and marketing strategic plan for REHS; conceptualizing and proposing innovative, audience-specific, integrated marketing strategies, including: campaign development, social media engagement, program implementation, budgets and timelines; evaluating the success of the communications and marketing strategic plan and using data and assessment to refine plans for future years; providing comprehensive marketing consulting services to operating units within REHS, including management of projects throughout the production process to ensure completion in a timely manner and within budget; planning events to advance the department’s brands; supervising and training student staff, including: Live On Street Team, Student Events Supervisor and Marketing Intern; coordinating and approving the work of artists, videographers, photographers, and printers and monitoring work in progress; working with vendors, and operational units, to order and approve branded promotional items and giveaways for REHS; producing copy for print and digital marketing and communications materials for REHS and RHS communications platforms.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Marketing, Advertising, Journalism, Telecommunications, or Public Relations; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in public and media relations, composing, editing and publication production; news, broadcasting, and print media, and/or marketing, advertising, and creative services; graphic design; word processing; desktop publishing; web design; presentation; spreadsheet and/or database software; public presentation; or radio production; or computer programming/technology; experience managing content for social media channels; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

Three to five years progressively more responsible or expansive work in marketing communications/public relations or related field; demonstrated success in building effective communications and marketing programs to both internal and external audiences; proven knowledge of Associated Press style guide; skilled in using Adobe Creative Cloud, Google Analytics and other messaging/content management tools; experience in digital and web multimedia projects; successful development and creation of social media to reach specific goals; strong independent thinking and leadership skills; ability to work effectively as a member of a team; energy, enthusiasm and creativity.

Work Hours

Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with occasional nights and weekends
