Serves as the full-service communications professional for the MSU Student Affairs and Services operation. Working in a highly collaborative environment, develops internal and external communications strategies and plans and implements public relations initiatives and projects to raise awareness of and promote MSU’s Student Affairs and Services people and programs; writes speeches, blogs, and statements and pitches stories, ideas, topics and trends to effectively communicate to a variety of target audiences; tracks trends in the industry and evaluates emerging best practices and content trends; develops and implements social media strategy; writes for and coordinates with the university’s central communications office to supply student stories that support the university’s brand positioning and help show excellence and diversity in the student body; actively participates in and coordinates issues, crisis, and emergency communication activities with the central communications office; coordinates with the university’s central advancement office to align communications related to MSU’s capital campaign and donor relations; ensures communications are developed in alignment with university brand positioning, messaging, and visual guidelines; provides communications consultation as required by the various units of Student Affairs.
Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Journalism, Telecommunications, Marketing, Advertising, Public Relations, or related field; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in public and media relations; composing, editing and publication production; news, broadcasting, and print media; and/or marketing, advertising, and creative services; graphic design; word processing; desktop publishing; web design; presentation; spreadsheet and/or database software; public presentation or radio production; or computer programming/technology; and/or experience in a field related to area of employment; may require management and supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Five to eight years progressively more responsible or expansive work in marketing communications/public relations or related field. Demonstrated success in building effective communications programs to both internal and external audiences. Experience writing and editing news stories or effective news releases. Proven knowledge of Associated Press style guide. Experience packaging and pitching stories to reach a variety of internal and external audiences. Established contacts with local, state, and national journalists and media organizations. Experience in digital and web multimedia projects. Successful development and creation of social media to reach specific goals.
