Working/Functional Title

Information data specialist

Position Summary

Looking for an Specialist-Outreach, also known as information data specialist, to collaboratively develop, manage, and implement a conceptual model or ontology that defines the domain of the historical slave trade, to support the efficient storage, querying, and display of Linked Open Data (LOD) for an historical slave trade project.

An ideal candidate will:

  • Work with metadata expert, data wrangler, database designer, query engine developer to explicitly define concepts, properties, relationships, functions, constraints, and axioms within the historical slave trade domain. This knowledge representation is a building block of the LOD system for an historical slave trade project.
  • Help scope and develop controlled vocabularies used to classify the domain. At present, we envision needing seven controlled vocabularies, including Types of events, Types of places, and Roles of people in events. Other vocabularies will focus on classifications for people involved in the historical slave trade including occupation, age categories, ethnic group/origin, and color/racial designation.
  • Document the structure of the ontology and vocabularies. This work includes writing labels, definitions, and comments about the conceptual model as well as terms in the vocabularies and linking these terms to other authorities.
  • Propose a process for modifying and updating the authoritative vocabularies to support both the expansion of the project (adding new terms for new collections) and the on-going maintenance of the vocabularies.
  • Follow established methodologies to create the ontology and vocabularies so they are valid and standards-compliant.
  • Outreach with a MSU partner associated with the historical slave trade project.
