Position Summary

The Department of Theatre at Michigan State University invites applicants for a position as Specialist-Teacher, also known as Assistant Technical Director. This is a one-year fixed term (with possible renewal), annual year (12-month) appointment at the rank of academic specialist in teaching commencing July 1, 2018 or August 16, 2018. Salary competitive and commensurate with experience.

Candidates should be proficient in modern scenic and prop construction including, but not limited to: accurate development and interpretation of working drawings, planning and facilitating, carpentry, welding (MIG and TIG), and tool maintenance. In addition, the candidate should have excellent time management skills, be familiar with commonly used software packages (MS Office, Vectorworks or AutoCAD computer drafting), and have experience working with and leading student crews. 

The Assistant Technical Director will participate in departmental production activities and serve as the Technical Director of Summer Circle Theatre productions each year (including installation and strike), work in collaboration with faculty and student designers and technicians, and mentor/supervise student technicians. The successful candidate will be a collaborative member in a production environment and have the opportunity to teach practica and labs in scenic technology as well as courses in the University’s Integrative Studies in the Arts and Humanities. Continued work in the professional field is encouraged.

The Assistant Technical Director will also be responsible for enforcing MSU shop safety policies and procedures, maintaining accurate shop inventory records, assigning tasks to student employees and volunteers, and maintaining a safe and productive working environment.

The department presents four-five major productions each academic year and three in the summer.  The College of Arts and Letters employs 250 full-time faculty with 3300 undergraduates and 175 graduate students enrolled in 24 majors, 38 minors, and 9 graduate programs that are housed in 8 departments and 22 research centers and interdisciplinary programs. These include such outstanding programs as African and African American Studies, American Indian and Indigenous Studies, Jewish Studies, the Center for Gender in a Global Context, and the Center for Interdisciplinary. The College also has a vibrant mentoring program at the College and Departmental levels. Required Degree

Bachelors -Technical Theatre or related field

Minimum Requirements

  • MFA or Bachelor’s degree in technical theatre or related field
  • A minimum of two to three years professional experience, or the equivalent commensurate professional experience.
  • Drafting, automation, rigging and props construction experience.
  • Excellent teaching, communication, and collaborative skills.
  • The ideal candidate will also have experience working with diverse student populations, and an interdisciplinary perspective.
