Position Summary

Employee will assist in the examination/ testing of animals submitted to the laboratory for routine postmortem exams and for surveillance projects (TB, Chronic Wasting, etc); Collects and prepares samples for additional testing within the laboratory; instructs and demonstrates examination and sample collection procedures to veterinary students; trims tissues and assists with initial preparation of tissues for histological exams; assists with after-hours submissions as needed. Scanning of documents; downloading gross image pictures into the computer in presentation software; collect and handle appropriately tissues from rabies suspect carcasses; euthanize moribund animals submitted for necropsy laboratory; maintain the written record of amounts of controlled substance used including appropriate  case number; coordinator with the Laboratory Sanitation Worker regarding cases that require special cleansing or disinfection; dispose of hazardous waste in an appropriate manner by following Environmental Health and Safety guidelines. Working hours are 8 AM to 5 PM Monday – Friday but may be adjusted as needed and may include weekends and nights for emergencies. Working Conditions: Moderately disagreeable working conditions involving with potentially dangerous animals and chemical and/or biological hazards.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four year college degree program in a related science field; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in basic laboratory techniques; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; the job may require specialty certifications, approvals, or training; may require successful completion/continued maintenance of accessibility standards. Must be a Licensed Veterinary Technician in the state of Michigan.
