University Ombudsperson

Position Summary

The University Ombudsperson helps students expeditiously resolve conflicts, disputes, and problems with any part of the University in a confidential, impartial, and independent manner.  Because of its independence, the Office of the Ombudsperson is both apart yet within the institution and thereby able to credibly recommend policies that need review.  Through this work, the Ombudsperson is often able to reestablish relationships between individuals, restore loss of faith or trust within the University, and help hold the University accountable to its policies and mission.  The University Ombudsperson has broad investigatory powers with direct and ready access to all University officials.  The University Ombudsperson conducts or participates in numerous workshops for students, faculty, and staff during the year and is consulted on various policy changes that affect MSU students.

The University Ombudsperson performs various duties concomitant to the position.  These include informing instructors, administrators, students, and staff about University policies, procedures, and regulations.  The University Ombudsperson also makes periodic reports to the President on the nature and business of the office.  Policy suggestions and recommendations based on the analysis of problems reported to the University Ombudsperson are also offered to the President.  Periodically, the Office of the University Ombudsperson surveys and analyzes the quality of its service to the University community. 

The University Ombudsperson also serves ex-officio on the University Council, University Committee on Student Affairs, All University Traffic and Transportation Committee, and both the graduate and undergraduate associate/assistant deans’ group meetings.  In addition, the University Ombudsperson may be called upon to serve on various search committees for University-level positions and may continue to participate in faculty activities in his or her department, school, or college, with appropriate deference to the requirements of the position.

The University Ombudsperson is appointed on a full-time, full year basis and reports to the President.  The performance of the University Ombudsperson is reviewed annually by the President and more extensively at intervals not to exceed five years, under a procedure determined by the President.

Required Degree


Minimum Requirements

A doctorate degree. Currently a senior faculty member, executive manager or equivalent experience in relevant areas.

Desired Qualifications

Currently a senior faculty member or executive manager with experience in or knowledge of:

  • Conflict resolution skills;
  • University policies, procedures and regulations;
  • Teaching and advising at graduate and undergraduate levels;
  • Academic governance;
  • Communication skills necessary to relate to a diverse community of students, faculty and staff;
  • University resources; and
  • Unit administration.
