Medicinal / Synthetic Chemist

Position Summary

The Medicinal Chemistry core provides HTS triage, medicinal chemistry design, chemical biology support and scale-up support for animal studies. The chemist will provide support and oversight for laboratory operations and coordinate research activities in order to meet standards and maintain / continue grant funding. The PharmTox department also houses the Assay Development and Drug Repurposing Core and the In Vivo Facility. This is an off-dated position funded for one year from date of hire with possible extension contingent upon funding renewal.

Key functions:

  • Apply, develop and execute strategies in multi-step organic synthesis and purification of high quality target molecules for biological screening. 

  • Analyze synthetic outcomes and leverage results for the design of future studies. 

  • Work closely with medicinal chemistry core director, lab leader and other project team members in the design, syntheses and optimization of compounds with improved potency, selectivity, together with improved ADME properties.

  • Participates in brainstorming activities in support of synthesis. 
  • Prioritizes personal synthetic chemistry efforts to ensure timeline adherence and project alignment to meet the medicinal chemistry core and university goals.
  • Work cross-functionally with faculty, other core facilities, post-docs and graduate students in the development of the medicinal chemistry core.
  • Assist in the preparation of formal reports to project team, patents, publications, and project planning.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired through completion of one or two years of post-bachelor degree work, such as a Master’s in the specific field of chemistry; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in overseeing research projects and laboratory operations, operating and maintaining a variety of laboratory equipment, performing specialized and difficult analytical and research techniques, and designing research experiments; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

  • M.S. in synthetic organic chemistry with 3 - 5 years of pharmaceutical industry experience.
  • Sound knowledge of synthetic organic chemistry (strategies and methods) and medicinal chemistry.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. 
  • Work independently and leads from the bench. 
  • Demonstrate creative initiative. Results oriented with effective problem solving skills. 
  • Open to suggestions and able to critically evaluate and embrace new or different ideas.
